Dec 4: Roberta Bondar

Woman of the day: Roberta Bondar (b. 4 Dec 1945)
Roberta Bondar is the first Canadian woman astronaut and the first neurologist in space.
Her interest in becoming an astronaut started from a very young age, when she lived on Lake Superior and had a beautiful view of the skies and the satellites that crossed them. Her family was very supportive of her interest in space and she always had access to microscopes and science kits and cameras for photographing the world around her.
On January 22, 1992, she was launched into space with six other crew members, achieving her childhood dream.

(Since I love science, I have to include this.) Her mission was STS-42, which had the goal of observing changes in organisms in reaction to very low gravity. This combined Bondar's fascination with space and her passion for nature photography. But seriously, she has papers with titles like "Neurofibrillar changes in goldfish brain in relation to environmental temperature." This is why I love science. A goldfish brain can be wonderful and fascinating because, with a progression of logic and reason, it tells us things about ourselves.
These days, Bondar spends her days doing just about everything. She is a nature photographer with several books, she gives motivational speeches, she advocates for education about the environment and science in general, and she works on analyzing data found on various NASA missions.
This is the second scientist that I've posted about in two days, but I just can't help it. Roberta Bondar is so cool. Just imagine what the world would have lost if her family had given her dolls instead of microscopes so she would fit better into their idea of femininity. Just imagine how many girls that has probably happened to.

Special shout-out to Lillian Russell (b. 1860), an actress, singer, and advocate for women's suffrage.
Hardly ever pictured without an excellent hat.
About twice the size of the average actress today and absolutely beautiful.
